By Matongo Maumbi,
Youths have always played a significant role in the socio-economic development of society. Chikuni Coops as a youth football club in Chikuni Mission of Monze District is no exception. Its membership is full of highly active youths that are determined to bring socio-economic change to the community.
In 2008 Chikuni Coops FC joined the Football Association of Zambia. The region where we had to play changed from the local area to the whole of Southern Province. For a team like Chikuni Coops this resulted in a major increase in challenges. And this is where your support would come in very handy.
The Team mobilises the youth in sports and survivor skills. There is a variety of professionals in the Club – Nurses, Teachers, Journalists, Clinical Officers, Counsellors and carpenters. A lot of people have come to join the club as it sensitises people on different issues on life in different forms. The club maximises its output by utilising the highly qualified members in sensitisation, counselling and other activities.
Sport is a central uniting factor for people around the world. Chikuni Coops features on social activities in the area. We have managed to organise local sensitisation campaigns by way of radio programmes, field visits in the community, sports tournaments and peer-to-peer sensitisation.
Chikuni Coops is a true youth cultural awakened group; an exceptional resource of youth survival skills knowledge; a voice for the youth and OVCs; a platform for people to utilise sports(men) in educating the people.
Chikuni Coops seeks to use football as a catalyst to promote positive youth development and also insure the health of grassroots football in future generations.
As the youth are seriously fighting against HIV and AIDS, Chikuni Coops would like to make them active so that they get occupied with constructive thoughts for socio-economic development.
The Club has 27 registered players. Three years down the line, the team is still going strong despite the hurdles of sponsorship. Individual contributions and team spirit is what makes the team in rural Zambia go forward, and never looking back nor allowing financial constraints deter them from having a good sports recreational time.
There is a committee that runs the affairs of the club.
Chairman – Charles Moonga, Secretary – Matongo Maumbi, Treasurer – Oliver Mangani, Coaches – Bray Sichoonga and Kizito Daka, Team Doctor – Elijah Lungu and Christopher Mulenga, Committee Members – Mrs Masuwa, P Makala, P Kasonde, C Nchimunya.
